Atmosphere Of Cooperation
Competition... A word that sparks different reactions to different people for different reasons. It can mean friendly rivalry or fierce confrontation, or any combination of the above. In the business of music, competition can certainly take many forms. At Overdrive Underground, we have adopted an attitude of co-operation and co-existence with our fellow broadcasters. Through this, The ODU has been able to devolop outstanding relationships with other stations internationally, whether they be online or terrestrial in nature. There are those who would argue that this mode of operation is self-defeating, but we heartily disagree.
Through our conversations with hundreds of artists in numerous genres around the world, we have found that they all have one thing in common... they want to be heard. Most of them don't care about mechanical royalties from radio as long as their music is played. Most of them don't care for the fact that some stations actually CHARGE those that are bringing content to the masses to do so. Certainly, anyone in the radio profession would like to be paid for their work, we all do. However, to be force to PAY (under the guise of "donations") to present your program is a practice that we find reprehensible. The concept of "donations" was created so that if you support an entity and you have the means to do so, that you would show your support in the form monetary giving. "Donations" are a voluntary concept, not one which should be forced upon anyone under false pretenses, as it is by some music outlets. In addition, most artists do not care for the fact that music... something that was created to bring the joy of expression to all...has become a cage match of battles and big business practices that have caused anything but joy.
Overdrive Underground will continue to be there for those that wants us to be there. Our labels will continue to be there for those that have grown weary of the business and the red tape. We will stand tall in the knowledge that we do these things in the name of what is nearest and deaest to our hearts... The Music.
